Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) / guided bone regeneration (GBR)This technique describes a method to regenerate bone. It can be used in the treatment of periodontitis, an inflammation of the periodontium. A membrane is placed over the defect, which guides and controls the renewal of the tissue that was lost over the course of the disease. The membrane is placed between the tissue flap (gum flap) and the root surface, to avoid the contact of the connective tissue with the root surface. This prevents the gum cells from growing down into the defect. This enables cells from the periasteum, to reach the root surface, so that periodontal tissue can be regenerated. What goals can we achieve with GTR? The main goals of the guided tissue regeneration technique are the stimulation of growth of the damaged tissue of the periodontium, the tissue surrounding the tooth. • The retardation of growth of the mucous membrane • Stimulation of periosteum and root cementium to regenerate • Stimulation of bone regeneration • reduction of pocket depth |
